Kate Spade Inspired DIY Jewelry Tray

I love Kate Spade. The flawless jewelry, the classic handbags, the stunning shoes- I love it all.
Unfortunately... my budget doesn't love Kate Spade. Wop-wop.
Thus, I made this:

I love the Ticker Tape Tidbit china, and thought a single plate would be fun as a jewelry dish. Although I have no doubt it's worth every penny- each plate comes up to $50. Again: Wop-wop.
Someday when I make my millions or win the lottery I'll buy one of everything online-mark my words!
Until then, I'll have to DIY what I can.
Kate Spade Ticker Tape Tidbit China
I stopped by a local thrift store and picked up this glass tray for a whopping $3:
After a good sanding and a couple layers of white acrylic paint I got everything I needed ready:
- Foam Brush -    -Painter's Tape-    -Scissors-     -Martha Stewart Glitter (yellow barite & copper)-
-Index Card-     -Metallic Acrylic Paint ( Deco Art Splendid Gold)-      -Mod Podge-

Next I cut a small hole in the index card, reinforcing the card with some painters tape:

Slowly but surely I added gold dot after gold dot, stopping every 10 or so to allow time for them to dry without smearing. The best part about the Kate Spade design is that there are overlapping dots- so anytime I messed up I simply let it dry & painted another dot covering up my mistake!
 Continual dot adding....
A little bit of glitter just for good measure & some Mod Podge to seal it all off!
 The finished product!
Of course, the best part was adding a little bit of my jewelry- just a few of my favorite gold pieces:
 Jewelry:
Cobalt Studs: Fornash
Gold Leaf earrings: Thrifted (for $1!)
Watches & Bracelet: Charming Charlie
Tiny Gold Locket: c/o Hibiscusdays Jewelry
Gold Circle Diamond Necklace: Gorjana (c/o Shopbop)

I am THRILLED with how it turned out. It's shiny and glittery and completely wonderful.
It may not be real Kate Spade, but I sure do love it.

Would you keep your jewelry favorites on this DIY tray?
If not, what's your go-to jewelry storage?

xo, lp

Pssst: I know was all people could talk about a little while ago..but how perfect are Kate Spade watches?  Le Sigh.

  17. I just thought of a question. I am not very "DIY" and have no idea how you sanded that tray, and what material is the tray i guess wood if you sanded it.... help a {clueless} sister out! I wanna do this proj this weekend!

    1. You are so funny! The tray was actually glass- but if you get tough enough sand paper you can scratch it enough to create grooves to help the paint stick- otherwise it kind of slides off the glass. another option is spray paint! that would work really well too!!

  22. Abso-freakin-lutely I would put my jewelry on that tray! I just bought two bare wood trays from Michael's and have been debating on what color to paint them. Think I might have found my answer! PS, my Kate Spade diy has encountered a few snags, but I'm refusing to give up so hopefully it'll be done soon. :)

  23. I can't believe you turned a manufacturing plate with a sprinkler on it into such a lovely jewelry tray! Love it! Kate Spade is really doing everything right this season... so many pretty prints!

  25. This is fabulous! I wanted to register for the silver polka dotted Kate Spade china for my wedding and my husband was not having it. He didn't seem to think we would still be interested in polka dots at age 50. But this is a great DIY!

I found your blog through the link on Kneadle & Bread (which I found from internet stalking everyone who was going to be at the upcoming Boston Blogger meetup!), and it's fabulous!

Also wanted to share my own Kate Spade DIY- I want everything from Kate Spade always and clearly cannot afford such a lifestyle, and I was able to find a cheapo KS keychain at TJ Maxx and turn it into a necklace!

  29. What a cool project! I hadn't seen the original dishes but I bet this would also be cute with heart shapes or splatter-painted. I'll be on the lookout for a cheap thrifted tray so I can make my own.

  35. I am enjoying seeing what all of you do for a Kate Spade project. If I didn't know what Kate Spade did before I sure will after I see all the incredible take off's you all do. Love it. Entertainment and education all at once. Now I want to find a plate or tray to make like this. I'm sure my daughter/grands(2) will know what it is. Make one for each of them, keep the family happy.
